The force that pulls the world!
Dept. of Chemistry, Incheon National University.
The Dept. of Chemistry was established within the College of Natural Sciences on October 1980. This was one year after Incheon National University was licensed and opened as Incheon College of Engineering in January 1979. The first freshmen were admitted in March 1981.
In November 1984, the graduate school was approved, following that in 1985, the master's program was introduced, and later in 1996, the Ph.D. program was launched.
The Dept. of Chemistry has developed steadily through its short history and many difficulties. It has accomplished many achievements by significantly improving its teaching and research environment, especially since its municipalization in 1994, with much attention from the city of Incheon and the surrounding area.
Since graduating its first class in 1985, the Dept. of Chemistry has graduated more than 1,700 bachelor's, 160 master's, and 20 doctors as of June 2023, and its graduates are active in various chemistry-related fields and social organizations.
Chemistry is a branch of the basic sciences that seeks to understand natural phenomena based on the fundamental principles and theories of science that have been discovered and established over time.
Chemistry is a discipline with many subdisciplines, including physical, organic, inorganic, and analytical chemistry, that are closely related to each other and require knowledge and understanding across these subdisciplines.
The Dept. of Chemistry combines teaching and research in many different areas of chemistry, reflecting the interdisciplinary character of the field.
In addition, to improve the curriculum for training professionals to lead Korea's chemical industry, we are strengthening on-site experiential education. This includes internships and tours of industrial companies and strengthening international competitiveness through international exchanges with sister universities overseas.
In addition, the Incheon Science Elite program, established in 1998 by three departments within the College of Natural Sciences, including the Dept. of Chemistry, is rated as one of the best science-gifted education programs in the country.
The Incheon Science Elite program targets elementary and middle school students in the Incheon area, making it an essential part of local education and contributing significantly to raising the profile of Incheon National University in the community.
As the only public university in Incheon, Incheon National University has been striving to serve as a center for education and research in the Incheon region, contribute to developing the local community through industry-academia cooperation with local industrial companies, and grow into a prestigious university in Northeast Asia. This department also strives to realize this goal by conducting sincere education and research activities centered on full-time professors.
In particular, the relocation of the Songdo campus in 2009 and the conversion of Incheon National University to a national university are expected to be a springboard for the development of Incheon National University. The Dept. of Chemistry is taking advantage of this opportunity to become a more advanced and competitive educational and research institution.
The Dept. of Chemistry will respond to the needs of the times to build a knowledge-based society based on science and technology and to the fostering of international informatization and the knowledge information industry that Incheon City is promoting, centered on the Songdo Free Economic Zone. Therefore, the department will lead the development of the local community and contribute to human development by fostering specialized professionals with knowledge-creation capabilities and international competitiveness suitable for a knowledge-based society.
