Talent with humanistic intellect and sensibility
Dept. of French Language and Literature
The Dept. of French Language & Literature aims to develop humanistic talent for the globalized world.
The department aims to produce students who have a broad understanding of the world through experience with French culture, art, and society while possessing French language skills and humanistic aptitudes.
In the lower grades, students learn French and humanities knowledge, while in the upper grades, they deepen their French language skills and specialize in literature and linguistics.
In addition to the traditional language and literature courses, our department also offers courses that lay the foundation for cultural professionals.
Therefore, students can complete the curriculum in the direction of "literature & linguistics specialization", "language specialization", or "culture specialization" based on their interests and career path.
On the other hand, the department organizes ‘European Commerce Joint Major’ and ‘Humanities, Culture and Arts Planning Joint Major’. ‘European Commerce Joint Major’ program fosters professionals in the European region with strong capabilities by studying European affairs and trade based on the humanities knowledge and language proficiency. ‘Humanities, Culture and Arts Planning Joint Major’ program aims to cultivate individuals with literacy and communication skills in the field of culture and arts, who can serve as planners and facilitators. The program focuses on fostering a humanities-based understanding of culture and the arts, as well as developing expertise in cultural arts-related administration, policies, and planning.
To extend and apply knowledge of the French language and culture in the field, our department sends exchange students to our sister universities, such as Univ. of Orleans, Avignon, Caen-Normandie and La Rochelle in France.
Departmental events for experiencing the French language and culture include French Poetry Recitation and Chanson’s Day, French Book Review Contest, once per year each fall.
The festival, held since the department's founding in 1979, is a place for students and alumni to learn and meet.
