INU's 64 academic departments and programs are organized into 12 colleges and schools.
The College of Humanities includes the Department of Korean Language and Literature, the Department of English Language and Literature, the Department of Japanese Language and Literature, the Department of Chinese Language & Cultural Studies, the Department of German Language and Literature, and the Department of French Language and Literature. These six disciplines seek to accomplish mastery in applied skills and theoretical approaches to these aforementioned areas. In 1980, the Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry, Department of Biology, and the Department of Home Economics were established. In 1988, the Department of Clothing was established, and these colleges formed the College of Natural Sciences. In 2012, the Department of Marine Science was established.
In the present, departments in the College of Natural Sciences are mainly grouped into two: the Natural Sciences (Department of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Marine Science) and the Life Sciences (Consumer & Child Studies, Fashion & Industry).

In 1980, the Department of Public Administration was established.
In 1981, the Department of Ethics Education, and the Department of Political Science and International Relations were founded. These departments formed the College of Social Sciences in 1988.
In 1997, the Department of Mass Communications was formed, and in 2005, the Department of Ethics Education became the Department of Ethics & Social Welfare (Major in Ethics, Major in Social Welfare).
In 2010, the Department of Library and Information Science, and the Department of Creative Human Resource were established.
In 2011, the Department of Ethics & Social Welfare became the Department of Social Welfare.
