“Make Incheon a Brussels of Asia＂was the slogan how Asia Economic Community Forum began since Songdo area became International Free Economic Zone and started its development as an international city. It already is the 10th event this year. Asian Economic Community Foundation(Chairman: Professor Je-hun Park, School of Northeast Asian Studies), established in 2008 under support of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been hosting the event for 10 years. This year, from first to second November, the forum was held on the topic of ”North Korean Denuclearization and Asian Community; Unification, Integration and Convergence.” The forum discussed how the possible institutes and orders among Korean peninsula through recent situation of South-North Korean Summit and North Korean-United States Summit will contribute to Asian Community Structuring and Asian Regional Integration in the future.
For the opening ceremony, Hak-soo Kim, the first chairman of Asian Economic Community Foundation, and Former Secretary General of UN ESCAP made an opening speech. Myoung-gyon Cho, Minister of Ministry of Unification, and Dong-sung Cho, President of INU, gave a congratulatory message to the 10th AECF event. Keynote speech was given by Young-kwan Yoon, former Minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and current honorary professor of Seoul National University. The speech was about “Diplomacy for Denuclearization and Peace on the Korean Peninsula.” Won-soo Kim, a former Deputy Secretary General of UN gave the second keynote speech on the topic on “Northeast Asia at Crossroad: Challenge, Opportunity and the way forward.”
Plenary Session 1, after the Opening ceremony, was held under the subject of ‘North Korea’s denuclearization and the New Order in Northeast Asia’. John Park (Harvard Kennedy School) gave a speech of “Prospects for a New Economic Order in Northeast Asia” and Justin V Hastings(The University of Sydney) gave a presentation on “North Korean trade networks under sanctions and implication for denuclearization.” For this session, Gak-soo Shin, the former Ambassador to Japan, Ha-kyung Lee, the Chief Editor of Joong-ang Newspaper, and Bruce Killingner, from The Heritage Foundation participated as the panel for a debate as an experts of North Korean nuclear issues.
Second Plenary Session held after the break, on the subject of “Integration, Transition and Conversion.” Luc Soete, the former President of Maastricht University and current UNU-MERIT Professor, gave a speech, “Addressing SDGs: a global mission oriented research and innovation approach.” Another speech followed from Byong-yeon Kim, Professor of Seoul National University. He addressed a speech about, “Market Activities and Trust of North Korean Refugees.”
18 different domestic and international institutions were involved in the forum, including Association for Comparative Economic Studies, Korea Institute for International Economic Policy participated as co-organizing institutes. The event is sponsored by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Unification, Incheon Metropolitan City, Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat, and 6 different NGOs and foreign institutions. 65 reports was presented in 20 sessions for 2 days. This year forum included various institutes from INU as a co-organizer, such as Institute for Unification and Integration, Northeast Asia Development Institute, Institute of China Studies, Institute for Japanese Cultural Studies, Asian Institute for Environmental Research and Energy. The forum infers a celebration of two newly established institutes, the Institute for Unification and Integration and Global Asia Research Network.
Model Asian Union(MAU), organized by AECF Youth Committee, integrated Unification Plan Competition held by Ministry of Unification. Participated students debated about the role of youth in the future unification situations. PRISM, the biggest domestic youth startup network, cooperated with INU startup business support platform to hold unification business hackathon.
Incheon Declaration was announced by Mr. Park, the chairman, as usual, at the end of the forum.
