“Make Incheon a Brussels of Asia＂has been the slogan of Asia Economic Community Forum(AECF), which celebrates its 11th this year, since the Songdo area became an International Free Economic Zone and started its development as an international city. Asian Economic Community Foundation(Chairman: Professor Je-hun Park, School of Northeast Asian Studies), was established in 2008 under the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has been hosting the forum for 11 years. This year, on Nov. 7th and 8th, the forum will be held in Incheon Sheraton Grand Hotel under the theme of "The Prospects of Building a New Order in Northeast Asia: For Establishing a Peace System in the Korean Peninsular and the Peace City in Incheon."
Considering that the talks on denuclearization during inter-Korean Summits and US-North Korea Summit held last year have reached a deadlock and have not been able to complete it, the forum will become a place to discuss about the significance of establishing new order in Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia and what this means to Asia Community Structuring and Regional Integration of Asia.
Furthermore, this year's forum, co-hosted by INU Yellow Peace Forum which is organized by Incheon Metropolitan City and the Incheon Institute, INU Institute for Unification and Integration and Institute for Northeast Asian Development, will be a part of an event of celebrating INU's 40th Anniversary.
Mayor of Incheon Metropolitan City Park Namchoon and Deputy Minister of Unification Suh Ho will remark the opening ceremony and former President of DongA Daily News Hakjoon Kim who is serving as an INU chairman of the board will have a keynote speech on "Reflection on theoretical basis of the approach of the south-north unification problem" and former Minister of Unification Jongsuk Lee on "Korean Peninsula Peace Economic Era and Incheon".
The main program of this year's forum will feature the following. Plenary Session 1, after the Opening ceremony, will be held under the subject of "A New Order or a New Disorder in Northeast Asia". Emil Joseph from the University of Essex will present "The Jean Monnet Method and its Relevance for Northeast Asia Regional Cooperation", followed by Barbara Demik from LA Times covering on "Back to the Future: North Korea policy after Trump".
During the Second Plenary Session with the subject on "Economic Wars or an Economic Community: Crisis and Opportunity in Northeast Asia", Byong-Yeon Kim from Seoul National Univ will have a keynote speech on "The Economic Cost of Implicit Ideological Bias" and Bassanjav Ganbold from UN ESCAP on "Regional integration in North-East Asia: making inclusive for all".
The 11th AECF, during which will be presented 58 reports in 15 sessions for the two days, is co-hosted by Association of Comparative Economic Studies, Nankai university including 12 more Korean and international organizations and association and is sponsored by the Ministry of Unification, Incheon Metropolitan City and 5 more organizations.
Model Asian Union(MAU), organized by the AECF Youth Committee, integrated the Unification Plan Competition held by the Ministry of Unification. The participating students will be debating about the role of youth in the future unification situations and the prize will be granted by the Minister of Unification for a winning team.
At the end of the forum, Incheon Declaration 2019 will be announced by the chairman Jehoon Park that the leadership that can bring unity and initiative in private sector are in urgent need to get rid of uncertainty that encircles the Korean Peninsula.
