INU (president Dong-sung Cho) with the I&YOU Global Social Contribution members held completion ceremony of New School building at the Viengkeo Elementary in Vientiane, Laos on January 9, Wednesday.
INU has been recognizing the various issues facing the world sensitively and has been actively working on international development cooperation based on the "Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" that the UN has chosen and the world is striving for and as part of its efforts, it continues to pursue the "INU (I&YOU) Global Social Contribution Project."
The project is a "self-effort, self-sustaining, and sustainable international development cooperation" project centered on construction services to build a classroom of Viengkeo Elementary in Vientiane, Laos, and educational services that provide various educational contents, including career experience and athletic education.
Viengkeo Elementary school is located to a small town in Vientiane, Laos and it is an economically poor village where ethnic minorities forced to move into the mountains and settled on the suburb of the city. While the influx of population and schoolchildren is on the rise as these minorities grow, school buildings are cramped and the lack of classrooms forced about 60 students to sit in a classroom and get inadequate education. They have been trying to build a classroom building with the help of a foreign country for years, however it was difficult to realize the expansion of the classroom like the hope because the high costs had to be invested.
Meanwhile, in July 2017 INU decided to conduct its own international development cooperation project for Viengkeo Elementary School in Vientiane, Laos. From December 2017 to January 2019, INU provided a cost to build a three-room building for it and sent a volunteer group to help build part of the building.
27 members of the 2018 third Winter I&YOU Global Social Contributions Group held a ceremony for the completion of the new classroom building with Laos officials and village officials at the Viengkeo Elementary School during after 11 nights and 13 days from December 31 of last year to January 12 this year.
The establishment of a new classroom is meaningful in that contributed to the establishment sustainable education infrastructure and local students assessed that it served necessary education for reality and future-oriented education services, in parallel with education services including career and health education, international culture and athletic education, which are not organized in the local education curriculum.
In addition, we organized the World Friends Korea (WFK) Youth Volunteer Group in the Summer and Winter season of 2018 to diversify our international development cooperation projects, and dispatched 13 volunteer teams to eight countries including Uganda, Ethiopia, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Kyrgyzstan, Vietnam, Myanmar and East Timor and five of them were medium-term volunteer groups, and they conducted overseas service for five months from last August. It is expected that the long-term and medium-term volunteer work will have much help and influence on the educational issues of those country.
"As a country that received support from the international community more than 60 years ago, I think it is only natural that we should actively engage in international development cooperation. INU will actively participate in the project by expanding support for overseas volunteer work. Rather, we thank Laos children for giving joy and hope through the small sharing of our university, and through our activities, we hope that children of Laos, who are hopeful, will study hard with dreams and become the leading role in creating the advanced future for Laos. We also hope that our college students, who will be sent to volunteer groups, will be able to participate actively in those solution by sensitively recognizing the issues of the world’s communal life, and through this we expect it to raise awareness of the world,” said Dong-sung Cho.
"Because of the narrow and small classrooms, many students in the village were forced to receive education in poor conditions for a long time, but I am most grateful that the new classes were created through the Global Social Contribution activities of the INU in Korea. I will teach and try hard to make our students grow brighter, clearer and healthier here. I am deeply grateful to the INU and students of volunteer group for helping us with all this,” said Vankham who president of Viengkeo Elementary School in Laos.
