Introduction

The 21st century has been predicted to become the era of Northeast Asia, and such prospect is gaining more power today. Historically, Northeast Asia has not been able to perform its economic potential for a long time due to political and military conflicts. However, based on the rapid growth of Chinese economy and the world situation different from the cold war period in the past, Northeast Asia is actively expanding in economic activities and is developing into one of the world’s top 3 education hubs.

As Northeast Asia’s total output rate in the world is expected to increase to 30% in 2020 from 21% in 2000 and regions with relatively slow growth such as Northeastern China, Mongol, East Siberia etc., have unlimited economic growth potential, the development of the region is giving us new opportunities. Located in between Japan, the world's 2nd greatest economic power, and China, the country developing into a global market, Korea is geopolitically in a very favorable position and has a relative dominant position in terms of industrial competitiveness and capital, meaning that the country secures advantageous conditions to become the economic center for Northeast Asia.

With the introduction of the new era of Northeast Asia, Korean government is also constantly promoting Northeast Asian economic hub construction project in order to develop Korea into the hub of peace and prosperity of Northeast Asia. As to actively cope with such radical changes in the international trade and commerce environment of Northeast Asia, it is imperative to nurture talented experts in the field.

To meet the demands of the times, INU has established the division of Northeast Asian trade and commerce on November 5, 1997, with the support from the government and city of Incheon so as to efficiently respond to the demand of field experts for the region and to take charge of the education and research adapted to the field. In this purpose of establishment, we have concluded a detailed agreement about student and academic exchange with 9 universities in 4 countries for on-site education of our students.

In brief, our division aims to foster future specialists of Northeast Asian trade and commerce by educating our students on the global environment surrounding Northeast Asia and the reality and politics of each Northeast Asian country on the matter.

Therefore, we feel confident that our students will easily develop into talented specialists of trade and commerce if they strive to concentrate on the 4 year course of study with a clear goal to achieve the above-mentioned objective. Jeong Hoon, Head of the Division of Northeast Asian Trade and Commerce of INU
